Why Essential Oils?

As a physician, I am usually met with raised eyebrows when I use or recommend products that are considered “alternative” to mainstream medicine. Let me be clear: I obviously believe in mainstream medicine. It is my work and I believe in what I do. As a pediatric hospitalist, I provided medical care to children who were sick enough to be hospitalized, and it provided me with great satisfaction to help children and families through illness and hospitalization. It is uniquely gratifying to see a sick child go from severely ill to well enough to be discharged home. Now as an urgent care pediatrician, I treat kids who are sick and injured, most of which could not be done without mainstream medicine. For the great majority of these kids, modern medicine is instrumental in providing them with healing and comfort.

But hospitalized children make up only a tiny percentage of the total population. Most children will never get sick enough to be hospitalized. They will, however, likely have countless (often unnecessary) visits to their physicians, urgent cares, and even emergency departments for minor injuries and illnesses. A classic example is the toddler with a cough and runny nose. The parent takes the time to bring the toddler in to the pediatrician’s office and waits to be seen. After a likely long wait, she is told that her child has a virus and that not only are antibiotics not indicated, but over the counter cold medicines are not recommended either because they are not safe in her child’s age group. A tired, frustrated parent then takes her cranky, sick child home, feeling defeated. She is upset with the doctor, and irritated by the colossal waste of time and money (the office visit, the gas, the time off work…) spent feeling like there is nothing she can do for her child.

A natural solution

Of course, I would never discourage a concerned parent, or any person for that matter, from seeking the reassurance of a physician, or seeking treatment for an injury or concerning symptoms. But all too often, there is either nothing that modern medicine can offer, or pharmaceutical intervention is inappropriately overused (like overprescribing of antibiotics for viral illnesses). Or maybe pharmaceuticals are used appropriately, but the patient still feels lousy or experiences uncomfortable side effects.

What if there were a natural solution for some of these problems? What if there were an oil, derived from nature, that could help your sniffly child breathe more comfortably? What if there were an oil that could encourage more restful sleep for your restless partner? Or an oil that could help cool an uncomfortable sunburn or calm head tension? Essential oils can do all of these things and more. Some people use them almost exclusively as their healthcare. Others (like me!) use them in conjunction with other natural options and modern medicine. However you choose to use them, I know they will make your life better. I was a skeptic, but after just a short time of incorporating essential oils into my and my family’s everyday lives, I became a believer.

So what exactly are essential oils?

Essential oils are aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, leaves, flowers, and other parts of plants. These oils serve many purposes within the plants (repelling insects, protecting from sunlight damage or bacteria), and have been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes. They can be used aromatically or topically, and some can be ingested as well.

If you’ve ever opened a bottle of essential oil, then you know these oils have powerful aromas. But don’t be fooled. Though they smell nice, they are so much more than just a nice aroma.

Essential oils are powerful and can be used in countless ways. We use essentials oils in my home to support our immune, digestive, and respiratory systems. We have also found incredible emotional benefits to the oils in these little brown bottles.

What’s the difference between a “Wholesale Customer” and a “Wellness Advocate?”

A Wholesale Customer is someone who enjoys full wholesale pricing (25% off), their own account dashboard, and all the perks and free product possibilities that come with being a doTERRA member. It’s like a wholesale warehouse membership for essential oils. However, a wholesale customer DOES NOT receive compensation or commissions for sharing doTERRA products with others.

Do I have to order every month to keep my wholesale account?

What if I want to start with other products?
